In the Swedish countryside two brothers watch a fox raid the farm and then secretly raise an orphaned otter they have saved from a hunter. The story is told as an adult’s memory, and what it turns over is childhood, nature, and the thin balance between the wild and the settled. When spring comes the boys accept, without much regret, that the animal will be better off free. Arne Sucksdorff spent two years shooting in the countryside and another two years cutting the film. Owls, otters, pine martens, rabbits, squirrels and lynx all appear in their own habitat. It took the International Prize at Cannes in 1954 and a big silver medal at the Berlin film festival.
