What The Great White Tower Is About
Two doctors work at Naniwa University Hospital in Osaka; they were classmates once and are both assistant professors now. Goro Zaizen, the surgeon, is brilliant and ambitious and will stop at nothing to reach a chair; he gathers votes, takes on debts, makes enemies. Shuji Satomi quietly attends to his patients and his research. The film shows at once the bargaining over the chair that goes on in the hospital corridors, who owes what to whom, and how the institution protects itself. The difference between the two men stands not as a matter of character but as two outcomes of the same system. Jiro Tamiya plays the lead in Satsuo Yamamoto’s hundred and fifty minute Japanese film, completed in 1966.
