What The Green Room Is About
The Green Room, known in French as La Chambre verte, draws on three works by Henry James: the 1895 story The Altar of the Dead, the novella The Beast in the Jungle, and the story The Way It Came. Truffaut began reading James's work in 1970 following a painful breakup with actress Catherine Deneuve, had Jean Gruault write the screenplay in 1974, but didn't reach a satisfying version until 1977. The film drew only 161,293 admissions in France, a commercial failure; it was the third and final film in which Truffaut starred himself. Who it's for: anyone curious about a film assembled from three separate Henry James works, starring the director himself, deeply personal despite its commercial failure. Who it's not for: viewers looking for one of Truffaut's box office successes.
