Lyalya Chyornaya What The Gypsy Camp Vanishes Into the Blue Is About
A Roma love story set in Bessarabia at the end of the nineteenth century: Rada, who bends to nobody, and Loiko Zobar, a horse thief. Neither will give in to the other, and the love turns into a war of pride. Emil Loteanu tells it through song, dance, horses and open country. The film comes from Maxim Gorky's early stories. It was one of the most widely seen films of its time in the Soviet Union, and it carried Roma music to an enormous audience. Svetlana Toma plays Rada and Grigore Grigoriu plays Zobar. It is also argued about now as a romanticised picture of Roma life.
