The Hanging Garden

William walked out of the house ten years ago without explaining anything to anyone. Now he is coming back to the family home in Nova Scotia for his sister's wedding. He arrives as a man who has built a life in the city, lost the weight and made peace with being gay; but the house remembers him as he was in adolescence. The garden, the room and the table are unchanged, and inside them everyone is carrying their share of it without naming any of it. Thom Fitzgerald's first feature does not handle the past through flashback but by standing it in the same room: now and then can share a frame. The silence inside the family is funny and unbearable at once. At Toronto in 1997 the film won both best Canadian feature and the audience award, only the second film to do both. Sarah Polley is in the cast.
