What The Harvesters Is About
South Africa, the Free State: farming country where the Afrikaner white minority lives closed in on itself, and where strength and manliness are the measure of everything. Janno does not fit: quiet, withdrawn, fragile. One day his devoutly religious mother brings Pieter home. The boy grew up on the street, hard and cunning; she wants to save him, and expects Janno to make a brother of him. A silent fight begins between the two: who is more of a man, who gets the inheritance, who is loved. Etienne Kallos directs, in Afrikaans. A hundred and seven minutes. It played in Un Certain Regard at Cannes in 2018. The images are wide and empty; the film states nothing outright and builds everything out of looks.
