What The Heineken Kidnapping Is About
In November 1983 the beer magnate Freddy Heineken and his driver Ab Doderer were taken, in what became the most notorious kidnapping case the Netherlands has ever had. Maarten Treurniet puts the weight not on the gang but on the psychology of a man held for weeks in a shed, with Rutger Hauer as Heineken. The film produced a legal fight of its own: Willem Holleeder, one of the kidnappers, sued to stop it being shown and lost. He is not named in the film, but the central figure Rem Hubrechts is plainly built on him.
