What The Hellstrom Chronicle Is About
A scientist called Dr Nils Hellstrom explains that insects will take the world sooner or later, because they adapt better, endure more and have been here far longer than we have. The macro footage cut in between is entirely real: ant wars, bee colonies, locust swarms, the cold mechanics of staying alive. The catch is that there is no Hellstrom. Lawrence Pressman is playing him. Walon Green and Ed Spiegel's 1971 film nonetheless won both the Academy Award and the BAFTA for best documentary. Real nature photography hung on a fictional frame; the argument about where documentary ends is still illustrated with this film.
