What The Hidden Life of Trees Is About
When the forester Peter Wohlleben published his book in 2015 arguing that trees communicate with one another, it went quickly onto the bestseller lists. Jörg Adolph’s documentary follows both the argument and the man who made it. Walking in the forest, Wohlleben describes the connections between roots, trees passing resources to each other, older trees looking after younger ones, and death and regeneration belonging to the same system. The film travels from Germany to Poland, Sweden and Vancouver, building the forest out of close footage and the turn of the seasons. It does not deliver a lecture. What it does is walk alongside someone who proposes looking at a forest as a community rather than as a store of raw material.
