Dr Bock runs the medical side of a Manhattan hospital and, after his personal life collapses, is thinking about killing himself. In the same days doctors start dying on the wards, and each death uncovers another piece of negligence. Paddy Chayefsky's screenplay indicts the institution as a whole rather than any individual: the hospital runs to sustain itself, not to heal anyone. George C. Scott plays the rage as exhaustion rather than volume. Chayefsky won an Oscar for this script and five years later turned the same anger on television and wrote Network. Diana Rigg holds the other side of it.
