What The Death of Mr. Lazarescu Is About
Mr Lăzărescu, in his sixties, lives alone in Bucharest with three cats. One night he wakes with a violent headache and stomach cramps, calls an ambulance, and from that moment is passed from hospital to hospital: a diagnosis, another diagnosis, waiting, paperwork, the next doctor on shift. His condition worsens by the hour while nobody treats it as their responsibility. Cristi Puiu films it almost as documentary and makes the collapse of a system look not tragic but unbearably ordinary and funny. One of the films that started the Romanian new wave, running two and a half hours.
