What Sieranevada Is About
A year after the father's death the family gathers in the mother's flat for the memorial meal, the priest is late, and the meal cannot begin. Cristi Puiu keeps almost the whole film inside that flat: people colliding in the corridor, doors closing, sentences left unfinished. Everything ends up on the table, the communist years, marriages, betrayals, the attacks in the news and the conspiracy theories about them. A hundred and seventy-three minutes sounds long, but the length is the method, because this is how a family's time actually passes. The title has no visible connection to any of it.
