What Aurora Is About

A man named Viorel: forty-three, divorced, an engineer, two daughters, and a hunting rifle in his hands. The film watches him for three hours as he shops, drops in at work, visits his former mother-in-law and drives around. He never explains why he is doing what he does, and neither does the film. Cristi Puiu plays him himself and keeps the camera at a distance, in doorways and corridors, so the viewer is always missing part of the action. The aim is not to make the killing comprehensible but to protect its incomprehensibility, which the scene at the police station at the end says outright. It is the second film in Puiu's projected cycle of six stories. Who it is for: viewers who can take the most austere end of the Romanian new wave. Who it is not for: anyone with limited patience, since three hours pass without a single concession.
