What The House of the Angel Is About
In the Buenos Aires of the twenties, Ana, the daughter of a well off family, grows up in the shadow of a devout, controlling mother and a father who runs the house by force. Nothing about sex has ever been explained to her; she knows neither her own rights nor what anyone else intends. When a politician who is her father’s close friend turns towards her she cannot understand what is happening, and she will never be able to tell anyone about it for the rest of her life. The film looks for the fault not in the girl but in the house that kept her ignorant and in the man who stays untouchable. Leopoldo Torre Nilsson’s seventy six minute Argentine film was adapted from a novel by Beatriz Guido; Elsa Daniel plays the lead and the production was completed in 1957.
