Painted Lips

The film tells the lives and the loves of a few young women in a provincial town. The choices in front of them are narrow: to make a good marriage or to stay where they are. Letters, gossip and half kept promises build the town’s own language; everyone knows what the others are doing and nobody says it openly. The account gives these lives from a place at once sentimental and merciless; the romance of the town and the price of that romance stand side by side. The film was adapted from an important work of Argentine literature. Alfredo Alcon appears in Leopoldo Torre Nilsson’s hundred and twenty minute Argentine film, completed in 1974.
