What The House on Trubnaya Is About

Boris Barnet's silent Soviet comedy follows Parasha, who comes to Moscow from the countryside. She takes a job as a maid in a crowded apartment building and learns the rules of city life as she goes: who owes what to whom, who knows which of their rights, what a union is actually for. Barnet meets the propaganda requirements of the moment without turning the film into a pamphlet, and his real interest is the everyday comedy assembled on staircases, in the courtyard and at doorways. The building itself works as the film's main character. Vera Maretskaya leads a large cast, and the camera moves with an energy unusual for its time.
