What The Girl with the Hat Box Is About
Natasha works in a Moscow hat shop but has nowhere to stay in the city; every evening she takes the train back out to her town. When she runs into Ilya, a penniless young man who has come in from the countryside to study, she takes pity on him and hands over the room that is registered in her name at her employers' address. Meanwhile her boss has fobbed her off with a state lottery ticket instead of wages, and nobody yet knows what that ticket is worth. Boris Barnet's silent comedy was in fact a state commission: the People's Commissariat of Finance ordered it to promote government bonds. What came out of that was not a dry advertisement but a fast, cheerful comedy. It gave Anna Sten one of her first big parts, and it puts Barnet among the few Soviet directors arguing for lightness alongside the heavy ideological strand of the era.
