What Kin-dza-dza! Is About

Two men in Moscow try to help a stranger on the street, press a button, and find themselves on a desert planet. Georgiy Daneliya's film is social satire in science fiction clothing: hierarchy on this planet is read off the colour of your trousers, people must squat in a prescribed way before their superiors, and the language has collapsed into roughly one syllable. The lack of money became the aesthetic, and the spacecraft are visibly rusted. The comedy is cold and built on repetition, so the first half hour takes adjustment. Made in the Soviet period, which makes its reach more startling.
