Leonid Yarmolnik What Heads and Tails Is About
Georgiy Daneliya's film opens with a young engineer trying to save enough money to get married. He takes a job on an oil rig in the far north of Russia and waits there, a long way from everything, for his life to begin. A letter from a friend ends all of it: his fiancée has married someone else. He quits, flies back to Moscow, and does everything he can think of to win her back, and none of the effort comes to anything. Daneliya lets it settle into neither tragedy nor outright comedy, and the disarray of the first post-Soviet years, the lack of work and the half-grasped chances, stays visible behind everything. The tone is melancholy without being sour.
