What Hopelessly Lost Is About
The film is adapted from Mark Twain’s Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Huck runs away from home and travels the river with a man escaping slavery. The two of them go down the current on a raft and meet the people on the banks. What they see along the way lays out the rules and the hypocrisy of the towns. The work keeps both the adventure and the humour of the book. Soviet cinema reads that book in its own language and puts the question of freedom at the centre. The ninety eight minutes are given to a single journey down a river. Roman Madyanov and Evgeni Leonov take the leads, with Vakhtang Kikabidze also in the cast. Georgiy Daneliya’s Soviet film was completed in 1973.
