What The Idiot Is About
Prince Muichkine, a young Russian, comes back to St Petersburg from a mental institution, convinced he can carry decency and kindness into a hard and cruel world. He becomes engaged to an innocent young woman while trying at the same time to save another woman caught inside her own life. Jealousy and his own naivety come together and the result is heavy. The account does not follow every branch of the novel but the triangle immediately around the prince. The film was adapted from the novel by Dostoevsky and carries one of Gerard Philipe’s early roles. Edwige Feuillere also appears in Georges Lampin’s hundred and one minute French film, completed in 1946.
