What The Idiot Returns Is About
František returns to his distant relatives after spending years in a psychiatric hospital, in the days between Christmas and the New Year, in a small town. He lands in the middle of the tangled relationships of these people who ought to be close to him: the reckonings between siblings, loves ending and beginning, the things the family does not say. Because he tries to understand everyone, judges no one and is affected by everything he sees, those around him take him for a simpleton; in fact it is not having lived much that lets him see human relationships as they are. Saša Gedeon’s hundred minute Czech film was freely adapted from Dostoevsky’s novel The Idiot. Pavel Liška, Tatiana Dyková and Anna Geislerová appear; it was completed in 1999 and won in several categories at the Czech Lion awards.
