The In Between

Tessa survives a car crash that kills her boyfriend Skylar. As she recovers, strange things start happening around her: a camera takes pictures by itself, a radio finds the same song, lights go off and on. Tessa becomes convinced this is Skylar trying to reach her. The narrative moves between two times, the relationship before the crash and the grief after it. The best sections are the early meetings; Tessa is interested in photography, Skylar in old films, and they meet in a cinema. The weakest is that the supernatural strand is never really built; the film chooses neither to be a ghost story nor to stay a drama about grief. Joey King plays Tessa and Kyle Allen plays Skylar. Arie Posin directed. An emotional romance aimed at a young audience. Painless for anyone who likes the genre, and unfinished for anyone who wants the supernatural element taken seriously.
