What The Last Starfighter Is About
Nick Castle's 1984 film follows a young man in a trailer park who sets a record on an arcade game. The game is in fact a test. Aliens call him to a war. The film turns the adolescent daydream directly into fact; the narrative also gets comedy from a duplicate left at home. The space scenes were made with computer graphics, an early example. Robert Preston is in the cast. It is remembered as a cult film. Who it's for: those who like the science fiction adventures of the nineteen-eighties. Who it's not for: viewers expecting today's effects; the graphics have dated.
