What The Boy Who Could Fly Is About
Milly, who has moved to a new town with her mother and younger brother after her father's suicide, finds Eric next door. Eric does not speak, has not communicated with anyone in years, and spends his days at a window with his arms out as if flying; he lost his parents in a plane crash. As Milly approaches him the boy slowly opens, and the film leaves whether the flying is real unresolved to the end. Nick Castle tells grief in the language of children and makes the two children's losses mirror each other. Lucy Deakins and Jay Underwood star, with a young Fred Savage in support. It is markedly sadder than most eighties family films. Who it is for: viewers who like the emotional youth films of the eighties. Who it is not for: anyone who wants distance from suicide and mourning.
