At a summer camp two children end up in the same canoe: talkative Marcus and Renee, who does not speak. Renee is autistic and expresses herself not in words but through a voice from her phone and the sounds around her. Marcus is irritated at first, then starts listening, and out on the lake a language they both understand appears. Erica Milsom directed it for Pixar's shorts programme. Madison Bandy, who voices Renee, is a nonverbal autistic person herself, and this is the first time Pixar put such a character at the centre. Sound design is the real means of telling: the reeds, the water and the tunnel are built as Renee hears them. It runs nine minutes. Who it is for: viewers who like short animation and unfamiliar ways of telling. Who it is not for: anyone looking for a feature.
