What The Last Train Is About

In April 1943 a train leaves platform seventeen at Berlin-Grunewald for Auschwitz, carrying some of the last Jews still in the city. The occasion was Hitler's birthday, for which Berlin was to be presented as a gift emptied of Jews. Almost all of the film takes place inside the freight car: no water, no food, no air, and as the hours pile up the way the people inside treat one another comes apart as well. Joseph Vilsmaier directed it together with his wife Dana Vávrová, who took over most of the work after he fell from a camera tower during filming.
