What The Last Valley Is About
While the Thirty Years' War burns its way across Germany, one valley in the mountains has somehow gone untouched. A fugitive reaches it first, then a company of soldiers who do nothing but plunder. Their captain is persuaded to winter there instead of burning it, and villagers and soldiers settle into a truce that nobody entirely believes in. James Clavell wrote and directed it, John Barry wrote the score, and the source novel is by J. B. Pick. Michael Caine is the captain, Omar Sharif the fugitive. The film failed commercially and pushed Clavell back to writing novels, which a few years later produced Shōgun.
