The Last Witness

Detective Oh is looking for whoever killed Yang, a small time brewer. The man was killed by a quiet riverside; there were no witnesses and no apparent motive. The investigation takes him through the winter landscape of South Jeolla Province and on to Seoul. The further he goes, the older the story that comes out. Betrayal, sexual violence and other deaths are in it. The film builds the murder not as a single event but as an account left over from the war. It does not lay out what happened as spectacle; it shows what came of it. The hundred and fifty eight minutes are divided between two times. Hah Myung-joong and Jeong Yun-hui appear in Lee Doo-yong’s South Korean film, completed in 1980.
