What The Lion from Estrela Is About
Arthur Duarte's 1947 Portuguese comedy follows Anastácio, who lives in Lisbon and is fanatically attached to Sporting. When the team travels to play in Porto, Anastácio gathers his family and follows, settling into the house of his friend Mr Barata. There is one problem: he presents himself as far wealthier than he is, and the lie keeps growing. It is one of the best-known comedies in Portuguese cinema, running on football, on the tension between the provinces and the city, and on the appetite for appearances. The Anastácio played by António Silva became a recognised type in the country. Light, loud and entirely of its period.
