What The Lovers of Verona Is About
Angelo, a glass blower from Murano, and Georgia Maglia, the daughter of a fallen fascist magistrate, are chosen as the stand ins for the stars of a version of Romeo and Juliet being shot in Venice and Verona. Before long they fall in love and their attachment begins to resemble the story they are standing in for. What threatens them is the scheming of Raffaele, the man who handles the Maglia family’s dubious business. The film uses the play within the play: the set, the costumes and the lines press down on real life. The account also keeps in the background the family relations left over after the fall of fascism. Serge Reggiani and Anouk Aimee appear in Andre Cayatte’s hundred and five minute French film, completed in 1949.
