The Loves of Pharaoh

The Ethiopian king offers his daughter to a powerful pharaoh to secure peace between the two countries. What changes everything is the interest the pharaoh, Amenes, takes in her. The account builds the distance between the decisions of the palace and the lives of the people through scenes on a large scale. It comes from the vein of historical productions with big casts in German cinema of 1922. Emil Jannings plays the pharaoh. For many years the film was counted as lost. In 1970 a badly damaged fragment of the negative was found in an archive in Moscow. Other prints came to light in the years that followed, and the film was restored to something very close to complete. Ernst Lubitsch’s hundred minute German film was completed in 1922.
