Emil Jannings took the lead actor award of the very first Oscar ceremony for two films at once: the AFI writes that he won it partly for his work in The Last Command and partly for The Way of All Flesh. In Josef von Sternberg's The Last Command he was Grand Duke Sergius Alexander, a former Russian general who, the summary says, is now scraping a living as an extra in Hollywood. In Victor Fleming's The Way of All Flesh he played August Schiller, who in one sentence of the summary leaves Milwaukee for the first time since his honeymoon to carry bonds to Chicago. Ernst Lubitsch signed four of his fourteen films here, and F. W. Murnau three.
