What Kohlhiesel's Daughters Is About
Ernst Lubitsch’s 1920 silent comedy is set in the Bavarian Alps and adapted from a rustic farce; it is usually described as a variation on The Taming of the Shrew. The innkeeper Kohlhiesel has two daughters, the pretty Gretel and the bad-tempered Liesel nobody will go near. Since the father will not let Gretel marry until Liesel does, a plan appears: marry Liesel first, get rid of her, and clear the way. Henny Porten plays both sisters, and that doubling is the entire idea of the film. Emil Jannings is also in it. It did well commercially and became Lubitsch’s most popular German comedy, opening in Berlin in March 1920.
