What The 'Maggie' Is About
The skipper of a battered little Clyde cargo steamer needs money to keep the boat afloat, so he cons an American businessman into hiring him to carry his personal cargo. When the American realises what has happened, he sets off after the boat to recover his belongings, and finds that nothing on the north-west coast of Scotland moves at the speed he wants. Along the way it becomes steadily less clear who is teaching whom. This is an Ealing comedy, but a harder one than the label suggests. Alexander Mackendrick does not serve up Scottish small-town life as charming folklore; the wearing down of the man being conned genuinely hurts, and the humour keeps turning cruel. Paul Douglas's American is not a caricature but someone who has to accept defeat. The best stretches are the scenes with the boy who serves as the boat's crew.
