What Whisky Galore! Is About
Wartime on a small Scottish island: rationing is on, the whisky has run out, and for the islanders this is a catastrophe. Then a ship runs aground offshore with its holds full of the stuff. They treat it as providence and start moving crates by night, against a customs service and a Home Guard commander who go strictly by the rule book. Mackendrick's first film, and one of the works that set the sly Ealing tone. A real cargo ship did run aground carrying exactly that.
