The Magic Gloves

Alejandro drives a taxi in Buenos Aires in an old Renault 12. His life is falling apart but he does not mind; as long as he can sit in the car everything is fine. The people around him are in similar shape: a rock musician, a flight attendant, a dog walker who lives on over-the-counter medication, and an acquaintance whose business ideas never work. Eventually somebody proposes getting rich on magic gloves imported from Canada, and they all go into it. Martín Rejtman keeps to his minimalist manner: flat acting, short lines, and editing that cuts every moment that could produce feeling. The narrative tells no story; the connections between the characters are accidental and no plan reaches an outcome. Vicentico plays Alejandro. The film represents the style of Argentine independent cinema in the 2000s. Who it's for: Viewers who like Argentine independent cinema, dry humour, and minimalist structures. Who it's not for: Nothing happens and connecting with the characters is made deliberately difficult. The narrative also arrives nowhere.
