Silvia Prieto

Silvia Prieto turns twenty seven and decides to change her life: she will give up marijuana and find a job. With her first wages she goes to Mar del Plata. An Italian tourist she meets there gives her a piece of information: there is another Silvia Prieto. She goes looking for her. Then another Silvia Prieto appears. People with the same name enter each other's lives. Martín Rejtman writes and directs. Rosario Bléfari takes the lead, with Valeria Bertuccelli, Marcelo Zanelli, Susana Pampín and Mirta Busnelli. It runs ninety two minutes. The style is among the founding instances of what was called the new Argentine cinema. The actors speak without inflection, the scenes are cut short, there is almost no music and the dramatic emphasis is deliberately erased. The subject is the ordinariness of identity. When the same name belongs to several people none of them stays particular; the film presents that not as a crisis but as an observation. Objects function inside the narrative. A brand of soap, the same jacket, the same chair; repeated things connect the characters. Rejtman kept the same form throughout his career and opened a line in Argentine cinema in the nineties. No character transforms and the plot arrives at no conclusion, deliberately. Who it is for: viewers who like minimal Latin American comedy and flat delivery. Who it is not for: nothing happens, the acting is deliberately flat, and the film offers no emotional way in.
