The Maids of Wilko

Wiktor, in his thirties, faints at the funeral of a close friend. The doctor tells him to rest. He goes to the house at Wilko where he stayed years ago, to his aunt and uncle. There he finds again the five sisters he once knew; all of them have grown up, married, been disappointed. It is there that he learns the one he loved has died. Andrzej Wajda directed the film from a story by Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz, and it was nominated for the foreign film Oscar in 1980. Daniel Olbrychski plays Wiktor. The telling does not build longing for the past as something sweet; the place the man has come back to is no longer there, and neither is he. Iwaszkiewicz said he liked the adaptation.
