The Man Who Loved Yngve

November 1989. The Berlin Wall is coming down and Jarle Klepp is in his final year at school in Stavanger. He plays guitar in a punk band, he has a girlfriend, his best friend is the axis of his life. Then Yngve walks into the classroom and everything Jarle knows about himself loosens. Tore Renberg's 2003 novel sold over a hundred thousand copies in Norway and is the first in a sequence of books built around Jarle Klepp. Renberg wrote the screenplay too; Stian Kristiansen directed. The film looks at the era's music and small-town confinement without piling on nostalgia, and keeps the identity crisis at a low, credible volume. It opened on 15 February 2008 and became the third most-watched Norwegian film of that year. It won Amanda awards for best film, best youth film and best direction. Who it's for: Viewers who like Scandinavian coming-of-age drama, a punk scene backdrop, and first love handled quietly. Who it's not for: The plot is small and stays interior. Anyone expecting large turns or a clean resolution will come up empty.
