What The Man Who Saved the World Is About
26 September 1983. In the Serpukhov-15 bunker outside Moscow, the duty officer Stanislav Petrov watches his screen report an intercontinental missile launch from the United States, and then a second one. The rule is unambiguous: report it upward. He does not, judging the system to be wrong. He is right. There is no medal and no promotion for that decision, and when the story finally came out years later he turned out to be an old man alone, not entirely able to cope with the attention. Peter Anthony's Danish film mixes documentary with reconstruction, following Petrov's last years and restaging 1983 with actors. Kevin Costner narrates.
