What The Man with the Balloons Is About
Mario is a confectionery manufacturer in Milan who becomes fixated on measuring how much air a balloon can hold before it bursts. What looks at first like a harmless curiosity soon takes over his life; his business, his relationship with his girlfriend and his mental balance all go, in turn, to that single question. It was the first of Marco Ferreri’s films with Marcello Mastroianni, and it had a strange fate: the producer Carlo Ponti cut it by two-thirds and released it in 1965 as an episode in a portmanteau film. Ferreri shot a colour dream sequence in 1967 and added it, and the work was re-edited in France under the title Break Up. The full version was not shown in Italy until 1979, more than a decade late. Catherine Spaak and Ugo Tognazzi appear alongside Mastroianni.
