A modest man in Naples meets a young woman whose body is covered in hair. He starts exhibiting her at fairs, then marries her. After the wedding an offer from a French manager expands the operation, and her body becomes entirely a piece of merchandise. Marco Ferreri drew on the real life of Julia Pastrana, the nineteenth-century performer with hypertrichosis. Italian censors cut the last fifteen minutes, and the producer Carlo Ponti commissioned a softer, happier ending that was the one shown in France. Ugo Tognazzi and Annie Girardot play the couple.
