The Mandalorian and Grogu

The Mandalorian and Grogu (2026) picks up after the third season of the series and is its first cinema film. The Empire has fallen and the galaxy is recovering. Din Djarin and Grogu are called up by the New Republic for a mission: rescue a Hutt named Rotta and apprehend a fugitive Imperial warlord. The film is built for people who have not seen the series; it establishes the relationship from scratch and connects loosely to what came before. Jon Favreau directed, having created the series. The series' visual method continues: backgrounds are projected onto enormous LED walls and the actors perform under real light. The technique was first used at scale on this series and has since become standard in the industry. The box office became the most discussed thing about it. It opened on 22 May and took 98 million dollars domestically, the lowest opening for a Star Wars film under Disney. The second weekend fell close to seventy percent. The worldwide total stopped at 342 million against a 165 million production budget and was counted as below expectation. Audience scores were good regardless; it took an A minus on CinemaScore. The problem was not how it was received but how many people came. It moved to streaming in July 2026. Pedro Pascal leads. The action is on a wider scale than the series and the space combat is the best part of it. It runs around 110 minutes. Good for: Star Wars, adventure, and family viewing. Less good for: the story is thin and some moments land lightly without the series' accumulated feeling.
