What The Married Couple of the Year Two Is About
Nicolas, who fled to America after killing an aristocrat, returns to France so that he can marry a wealthy woman; all he needs is a divorce from his first wife Charlotte. The Revolution having made divorce legal should make this simple, except that seeing other men around Charlotte revives his own interest. The year two of the title is the second year of the revolutionary calendar, the period of the Terror, so the chase runs in the shadow of the guillotine. Jean-Paul Rappeneau turns a historical moment into fast comedy. Belmondo does his own stunts and Marlene Jobert never gives an inch.
