Lovers Like Us

Nelly runs away on the point of marrying in Caracas and, to escape the men chasing her, takes refuge on the boat of a man she does not know. Martin left his life in Paris years ago for a deserted island and wants only to be left alone. Nelly wrecks his arrangement within the hour and the two are forced to leave together. Jean-Paul Rappeneau builds it as a fast romantic comedy, with unbroken dialogue and scenes riding over each other. Yves Montand and Catherine Deneuve play them, and their rapport is the film's entire capital. The Caribbean exteriors are unusually open for French cinema of the seventies. The idea is simple: two people who want to escape cannot escape in the same direction. Who it is for: viewers who like classic French romantic comedy, Deneuve and Montand.
