Franklin Chang-Diaz What The Mars Underground Is About
This fifty two minute documentary lays out the rocket engineer Robert Zubrin’s plan for putting people on Mars within ten years. Called Mars Direct, the plan proposes something simple in order to bring the cost down: instead of carrying the fuel from Earth, make it out of the Martian atmosphere. Using three dimensional animation the film builds a picture of what the first crewed journey would look like, and it goes through the obstacles to staying alive once you are there, one by one. Zubrin is both the subject and the voice of the account, speaking for a community that has been trying to get the plan heard for years, and the title of the film comes from that community. The American production directed by Scott J. Gill was completed in 2007.
