What The Matinee Idol Is About
A famous stage star leaves town to escape the attention, changes his name, and by accident joins a travelling theatre troupe. He falls for Ginger, who runs the company and stars in their Civil War melodramas. Then his own producer sees the play and takes it for a comic masterpiece. An early Frank Capra, the film was long considered lost; a print turned up at the Cinémathèque française in the early nineties and it was restored in 1997. What is uncomfortable about it now is plain enough: the man’s fame comes from performing in blackface, then among the most common habits of the American stage.
