What The Mediator Is About
In an ordinary Soviet industrial town whose only notable feature is a radio telescope, people suddenly begin behaving like machines, taking aliases drawn from geometry and organising themselves into a new hierarchy. The source of the spread is a device of alien origin, called the mediator, able to implant extraterrestrial minds in human bodies. Limited by the technology available on Earth, the aliens have to use human means to prepare the ground for a full invasion. When the mediator turns out to be unable to take the minds of children, madmen, geniuses and rebels, a struggle begins over the fate of the town and of human civilisation. Vladimir Potapov’s long television film was adapted from a novella by Alexander Mirer, who wrote the screenplay and disliked the result.
