What The Merger Is About
Troy, a former professional footballer whose career ended abruptly, comes back to the town he grew up in and is talked into coaching the local side, which is close to folding. The timber mill has shut, the young have left, and the club can no longer find enough players. Troy’s answer is to put the refugees who have recently settled in the town onto the field, and that draws a reaction both in the club and in the town. The film takes Australian football as a question of belonging and builds its humour without making anyone smaller. Kate Mulvany and John Howard are also in the hundred and three minute production adapted from Damian Callinan’s one man show. Mark Grentell’s film was completed in 2018.
